This Ingredient Glossary is a practical guide to how ingredients function in curly hair care.
Hair responds to complete formulations, concentration and technique — not to isolated ingredient names taken out of context.
The glossary below explains what commonly used ingredients are designed to do. Think of it as understanding each instrument in an orchestra — while remembering it’s the full composition that creates the final result.
FORMULATION BASE
These ingredients appear high on the ingredient list because they form the liquid foundation of a formulation. They act as the primary solvent, allowing conditioning agents, proteins, humectants and other functional ingredients to distribute evenly throughout the hair.
Aqua (Water / Distilled Water)
A purified solvent forming the primary base of most cosmetic formulations that allows cleansing, conditioning and botanical ingredients to distribute evenly.
Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice
When used as a base ingredient, Aloe Vera functions as the primary liquid phase of a formula. It contributes hydration and slip while serving as the solvent that carries the rest of the formulation.
CLEANSING AGENTS
Cleansing agents are tools. Selecting the right tool depends on the outcome you want, whether that is gentle regular cleansing, a deeper clean to remove buildup, or chelation to address mineral content. Chelating ingredients are designed to help remove mineral deposits that can accumulate both on and within the hair fibre over time, particularly in hard water areas. Thoughtful cleansing supports balanced scalp function and prepares the hair to respond well to conditioning and styling.

FRAGRANCE COMPONENTS
Fragrance is included for sensory experience. Some individual fragrance constituents such as Linalool, Limonene, Coumarin and Benzyl Salicylate may be listed separately due to regulatory requirements.
Some fragrance ingredients are plant-derived and may contain minor antioxidant or antimicrobial properties. However, within cosmetic formulations their primary role is aroma rather than structural hair support.
Preference is personal, and scalp comfort should always guide choice.
Strawberry Fruit Essence
An aromatic water derived during fruit concentration processes. Functions primarily as fragrance within cosmetic formulations.
FRAGRANCE DECLARATIONS
These are the types of general scent listings within ingredient panels that you may see. They indicate the presence of a fragrance system. Specific fragrance constituents may be listed separately due to regulatory requirements.
100% Natural Fragrance
A fragrance system composed entirely of naturally derived aromatic materials.
Allergen-Free Fragrance
This is a fragrance blend formulated without specific regulated fragrance allergens above declaration thresholds. These are the fragrance components that must legally be listed separately when present above certain levels. “Allergen-free” does not mean fragrance-free, and individual sensitivity can still vary. If you are highly fragrance-sensitive, patch testing is always advisable.
Fragrance-Free
Indicates that no fragrance blend, parfum, or added scent system has been included for aroma purposes. A fragrance-free product may still have a natural scent from its raw ingredients such as plant extracts, oils, or base materials. These ingredients are not added to create perfume, but some may contain naturally occurring aromatic compounds as part of the plant itself. “Fragrance-free” does not mean scent-free. It means no added fragrance system has been used. For individuals with high fragrance sensitivity, reviewing the full ingredient list is still recommended, as natural botanicals can contain trace aromatic constituents inherent to the plant.
Fragrance (Phthalate Free)
Indicates the presence of a fragrance system within the formulation. “Phthalate free” refers to the exclusion of specific plasticising fragrance carriers; it does not indicate the absence of fragrance components.
Fragrance / Parfum
Indicates the presence of a fragrance system within the formulation.
Plant-Derived Scent Blend
A fragrance blend made from botanical aromatic components.
REGULATED FRAGRANCE ALLERGENS
These ingredients are fragrance constituents that may occur naturally in essential oils or be synthetically derived. Their inclusion does not indicate structural hair benefit. They are required to be declared when present above trace thresholds. They are specifically regulated because a small percentage of the population may develop skin sensitivity or allergic contact dermatitis to certain fragrance molecules. Even when used safely within cosmetic limits, these individual components have been identified by regulatory bodies as potential sensitizers for some individuals. For transparency and consumer safety, cosmetic regulations require these specific fragrance constituents to be listed separately when they exceed defined concentration thresholds. This allows individuals who know they are sensitive to particular fragrance molecules to identify and avoid them. Their presence does not automatically mean a product is unsafe or irritating. It simply reflects regulatory transparency around known fragrance sensitizers.

A Final Word
Ingredients function within complete formulations. Concentration, pairing and technique all influence outcome. No single ingredient determines whether a product will work for you — your hair’s density, tensile strength, strand width, condition and routine matter just as much.
