Malibu C™ Hard Water Wellness® Hair Remedy is a chelating treatment designed to help remove mineral build-up caused by hard water.
Chelating simply means binding to and lifting away mineral deposits that have attached themselves to the hair. Unlike shampoos or non-lathering cleansers, which remove oils, dirt and styling products, a chelating treatment specifically targets minerals such as calcium, magnesium, copper and iron.
As curly folk we're often focused on what products go onto our hair, but rarely question the quality of the water we're using to cleanse, condition and style it.
Our hair strands are like tiny sponges. Over time they absorb minerals from our water supply, including calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and other dissolved metals. Unlike styling products or natural oils, these minerals don't simply wash away with shampoo or a non-lathering cleanser. Instead, they gradually accumulate on the hair, contributing to dullness, roughness, dryness, brassiness and hair that simply doesn't behave as it once did.

• Following my Cut It Kinky education in the USA, I've incorporated this treatment into my salon services on both tighter textures and looser curl patterns. I absolutely love the results.
• One of the biggest clues that mineral build-up is present is when your usual products suddenly seem to stop performing as well as they once did.
• Hair often feels noticeably more hydrated—and becomes more receptive to conditioning—after treatment. Curl families also tend to form more readily because the mineral coating has been removed.
• During application, minerals released from the hair bind with the Vitamin C complex. If you notice a metallic smell while the treatment is processing, that's often a good indication mineral build-up was present.
• Malibu C recommends weekly use. In my own experience, I'd suggest using it as required, depending on your water supply and how your hair is behaving. Once a month to two seems a good average based on my experience in the salon.
• Even if you have a water softener, minerals and other elements can still accumulate on the hair over time. Softened water isn't the same as mineral-free water.
• If you've never considered the quality of your water before, this is one of the first places I'd investigate before changing your entire product routine.
WHY CHELATING IS DIFFERENT FROM CLARIFYING
A clarifying shampoo removes styling product, oils and everyday residue from the hair and scalp.
A chelating treatment specifically removes mineral deposits left behind by hard water, tank water, swimming pools, ageing plumbing and other dissolved metals in the water supply.
Sometimes your hair needs one. Sometimes it needs the other. Occasionally, it benefits from both.

DIRECTIONS:
Shampoo and rinse thoroughly.
Empty the sachet into the palm of your hand and add a small amount of water to dissolve the crystals into a paste.
Apply evenly through wet hair, scrunching throughout the lengths.
Leave on for up to 5 minutes before rinsing.
Shampoo again, rinse thoroughly, then follow with your preferred conditioner.
If your hair is naturally white, silver or completely non-pigmented, shampoo once more after the treatment to ensure all of the Vitamin C complex has been removed.
